Ms. Hartshorn’s Classroom News
June 7, 2011
Dear Moms and Dads,
Okay, one more newsletter after all.
Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedules to join us on Monday evening for our Primary Sharing Family Night. Your child planned and prepared a great deal for this, and the excitement was in the air for over a week before this date.
It was made even more special by your children's gift of the MacIntosh apple trees to Mrs. Orr in the Peace Garden—with the hopes of beginning an orchard or “giving” trees.
I will post photos of the Family Sharing on Shutterfly along with this newsletter.
My wish is that your children have discovered (now or before) the importance of their natural environment, and all of the realistic and magical gifts it has to offer each of us personally. As Cory said, "You can't really love something until you get to know it." Place-based education, as your children experienced, is all about falling in love, appreciating, respecting, and then caring and protecting our environment.
We will be celebrating all children who have a summer birthday on Wednesday, June 15 in our classroom. If your child has a birthday from June 15 until August 30, he or she will be celebrated. Children often bring a treat to school to celebrate their birthday during the school year, so if your child has a summer birthday, please feel free to send in a treat on this day (June 15) for your child to share with his/her classmates. Fresh fruit like cut up peaches, oranges, apples, pineapple slices, grapes, melon, etc is always a hit. Frozen yogurt, cheese and crackers or veggie sticks with dip is also popular, and believe it or not---large dill pickles seem to be a major hit with kids at this age.
Homework Pouches/Bags:
Earlier in the year I sent home a homework pouch with your child to help him/her carry homework, school notices, finished papers, etc. home or back to school. These are pretty expensive at almost $6 a piece, so I'd like to collect them and wash them up, so they can be re-used next year. Please send your child's homework pouch/bag back to school this week, by Friday, June 10th. That way I will know if I need to purchase more for next year. Thank you.
Dates to Remember:
June 8th: Hike in AM with Sharon Stafford as our last Four Winds and closure lesson with her; please make sure your child is appropriately dressed (including proper footwear), for the weather and hike in the woods.
June 13th: Class Placement notice sent home
June 14th: Field Day and School-wide Picnic—picnic is free to all students
June 15: Summer Birthday Celebration
Report cards and Narrative Reports sent home
June 16: Step-Up Day—For a time in the AM Children visit the classroom they will be in next year, and get a chance to see who else will be in their classroom with them. I am waiting to find out if Erin Gale, our new primary grade teacher for next year will be able to join us on this day. She is trying to make it happen, and I'll let you know if she's able to rearrange her current work schedule to do so.
June 17: Last Day of School~ It's been reported that buses will arrive and students will be dismissed at 12:44 that day.
