Hi moretownschool.hartshorn@blogger.com, Check out the changes to Hartshorn Classroom News site.       Journal   Class updates & news Vermont Symphony Orchestra Visits Moretown School on May 4, 2011 VSO Percussion Trio May 4, 2011   Dear Families, The Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s (VS0) “Drumshtick” Percussion Trio, (thanks to the Vermont Employees Credit Union), shared many percussion instruments from around the world with us today. They said there are three things you can do to play a percussion instrument:  strike, shake, and scrape. Below are some photos of the instruments they shared with us today. Brian Johnson, Jane Boxall, and Robert Levis provided a lively performance spreading the word that classical music can be fun.  They termed their show "Percussion Means the World to Us," and we were entertained by many instruments (Western and Non-western) which helped us explore the culturally diverse language of music.  The first photo shows Mr. Levis hitting stones together, and the second photo has Ms. Boxall hitting two bones together. They told us these were probably the first percussion instruments. It was quite surprising to me to run into a familiar face among this trio.  I expected to see my younger brother's drum instructor, Tom, who has visited MES many times with this trio.  However, I saw my former Burlington High School concert band and marching band director, Mr. Levis.   I must admit that I don't recall that he had such a sense of humor, (as he displayed today),  when I was playing alto sax for him in high school—could have been my skill, or lack thereof.  Oh, and by the way, he and I have agreed that it was only a "couple of years ago," that he was my band director. I hope these photos help to initiate a conversation with your child about today's VSO performance.
