Hartshorn’s Classroom News

Dear Families,
When's the helicopter landing? When's the helicopter landing? Will the police dogs be riding in the helicopter? Will the helicopter land on top of the school? When is picture day? What time are our pictures being taken? What time is Open House tonight? When's the helicopter landing? Needless to say, there was a great deal of excitement this week leading up to Thursday. Your children were wonderfully patient, cooperative and eager to participate in all of it.
What a busy week it was! On top of Open House, we had picture day and two K-9 unit dogs with their officers visit us this week. We also had the wonderful opportunity to have our first guidance class with Ms. Shackett this week. She led us in an activity that helped us identify feelings by role-playing and guessing different emotions, and having us take turns discussing times when someone might feel this particular way. She wrapped up the lesson with a personal feeling thermometer we each colored showing how we feel about some specific situations. The children will bring these home next week. What an exciting week it was!
It was so good to see so many of you at Open House. Your children were so very excited as they prepared for your arrival. They even tidied up the book shelves, made special structures for you to notice, decorated and made special notes for you, and overall, took pride in showing off their place of learning.
I hope Open House gave you at least a peek at what our school days are like--some of the activities we do, the learning that takes place, and the sense of community we experience on a daily basis. If you ever have questions, comments or concerns please contact me anytime throughout the year. My email is bhart@madriver.com and my school number is 496-3742, ext. 122.
I'm sure your child will have many things to talk about at the end of this week. Please check out the photos in the new album on Shutterfly for this week. One way to begin a conversation with your child is to look at the photos together and ask your child, “Tell me what is happening in this picture.” Here are some questions to ask your child and some sentences starters that might help a conversation begin at home with your child about his/her school week.
